The leaders of America’s so-called “Christian Right” claim they champion a religion of love and understanding, yet they have persistently shown nothing but disdain, loathing, and contempt for gay and lesbian Americans. They often wrap their venom in religious rhetoric and clichés, at other times in pseudo-science and faux claims of protecting “traditional values.” But Jesus – who said absolutely nothing about homosexuality – championed social outcasts and those deemed “unclean” by the dogmatic Pharisees of his day. Modern science has confirmed that homosexuality is a naturally occurring event, not a “disorder” or “disease” that can be cured. And the most fundamental traditional American value is equality for all citizens: something the leaders of the Christian Right deem an anathema.
Since “Lucky Louie” Sheldon was busted, his daughter, Andrea Lafferty, has become the voice of the Traditional Values Coalition, and her voice is shrill and screechy in keeping with the family tradition. Most recently she proclaimed her pride in being a member of a hate group:
by: Alvin McEwen Fri Apr 23, 2010
From my online buddy Jeremy Hooper comes an interesting comment from the Traditional Values Coalition’s Andrea Lafferty.
She was commenting on the fact that the Southern Poverty Law Center designated her group as one of 12 anti-gay hate groups:
“The SPLC is the group that wrote a memo used by Obama’s Homeland Security Department claiming that veterans and pro-lifers were dangerous to national security.
“Actually, it is a badge of honor for TVC to be listed by the SPLC as a ‘hate group.’ It proves we’re effective in challenging liberalism, socialism, and the LGBT agenda.”
That comment about SPLC writing a memo for the Obama Administration is a lie. But since when do you expect a hate group to be truthful. Now it's important to establish what SPLC constitutes as an anti-gay hate group…
One of her other recent rants highlighted her Proud-to-be-a-Hate-Monger status:

The gay community has been accused of destroying civilizations, corrupting morals, and yes even molesting infants, but Andrea Lafferty of the Traditional Values Coalition has officially reached the zenith of homophobia with her new accusation – pro-gay laws will allow the VA to molest disabled veterans.
Lafferty's new line of craziness took place during the Freedom Federation’s “Awakening” conference and it continued the same inaccurate line of attack she and her organization (the Traditional Values Coalition) have continued against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) that Congress will possibly be voting on in the coming weeks.
ENDA would protect the lgbt community against employment discrimination. However, Lafferty and TVC have been pushing the phony assertion that ENDA would protect behaviors such as pedophilia, prostitution, bestiality. This video, courtesy of Right Wing Watch has to be seen to be believed. …
But Mrs. Lafferty was just keeping up the fanatical family tradition. From “Lucky Louie” at a 2006 religious right conference:
Sheldon demanded laws that treat homosexuality as “a social disorder.” Decrying the term “homosexual” as the brainchild of a 20th-century German psychologist obviously sympathetic to gays, Sheldon implored the conferees to return to the 18th century’s superior diction. “The word used in America [then] was ‘perverted,’” he noted. When Sheldon was asked by an audience member what to call homosexuals, he shot out of his chair and shouted, “Call them what they are – sodomites!” [italics added]
You have to feel sorry for people like Sheldon and Lafferty who have focused their lives on demeaning others. Like parasites, they make their living by hurting others. And no one is better at demeaning others and parasitic living than Peter LaBarbera, founder of Americans for Truth about Homosexuality, the sole (and soulless) purpose of which is to denigrate and incite hatred for gay and lesbian Americans. For more on Mr. LaBarbera’s “activities,” see this, and this, and this, and this, and this, and this.

Televangelist Jim Bakker made headlines in 1987:
Up until 1987, televangelist Jim Bakker and his wife Tammy Faye were living in extravagance. The way they told it, prosperity was a gift from God, and He had blessed them with an army of followers and immense personal fortunes. The PTL ministry had a burn rate of $500,000 per day. Everything seemed to be going perfectly. But then Jim was caught fucking anything with a pulse and they could no longer conceal their egregious cash skimming.
Jim got snagged funneling $265,000 in hush money to virginal church secretary Jessica Hahn, in order to cover up their adulterous tryst. Suddenly the Bakkers became pariahs. All of their friends deserted them. Even fellow Assemblies of God minister Jimmy Swaggart took some unnecessary potshots, just for fun and just to be a dick. Swaggart went on CNN and told Larry King that Jim was a “cancer in the body of Christ.”
A “cancer in the body of Christ”? A year later, Jimmy Swaggart was exposed for the cancerous fraud he was:
The Fall of Jimmy Swaggart
By Joanne Kaufman
He used to say, letting his face slip into that big, easy grin, “The Lord has been good to me,” and so it seemed. He had come bootstrapping out of a backwoods upbringing in Ferriday, La., borne up on the wings of Pentecostal Christianity, to become perhaps the preeminent televangelist. He had all the perquisites of that special priesthood – three spacious homes, a personal jet and the use of a luxurious ministry “retreat” in California. Just as his antic cousin Jerry Lee Lewis was the original wild man of rock and roll, Jimmy Lee Swaggart, 52, was the charismatic maestro of high-energy salvation. In the course of each sermon, the fired-up preacher would rant, weep, thrust his Bible high in the air and strut the stage this way and that, whipping his followers and himself to a devotional frenzy. An acute businessman as well as a spellbinding performer, he built an electronic empire with hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide and an income from contributions of $150 million a year.
But Swaggart came back, as hypocritical – and violent – as ever in a televised sermon broadcast on Omni 1, a Toronto multicultural station. The broadcast was also carried by various outlets in the United States. From a report by Jan Prout posted on 365Gay.com, September 20, 2004:
According to a transcript of the program, Swaggart said “I’m trying to find the correct name for it ... this utter absolute, asinine, idiotic stupidity of men marrying men. ... I’ve never seen a man in my life I wanted to marry. And I’m gonna be blunt and plain; if one ever looks at me like that, I’m gonna kill him and tell God he died.” The remarks were met with applause from his congregation. … [italics added]
That the discredited “I have sinned” televangelist would make such a statement is not that surprising. What’s terrifying is that his “remarks were met with applause from his congregation” of evangelical “Christians.”
That same year, on September 12, 2004, the Los Angles Times reported that Paul Crouch, the president of Trinity Broadcasting Network, paid Enoch Lonnie Ford $425,000 in 1998 in exchange for his silence about an alleged homosexual affair they had had in 1996 at a TBN-owned cabin near Lake Arrowhead, California. Trinity Broadcasting Network claimed to be the world’s largest Christian media empire with 24-hour programming via 47 satellites and 12,500 affiliates reaching a total of 92,540,954 U.S. households. In a statement released on September 22, 2004, TBN denied Crouch had had a homosexual affair, but confirmed the hush money paid to Ford and the fact that faith-based intolerance is indeed good for business, as reported on Advocate.com:
Christian network denies its founder had gay affair
The world's largest Christian broadcasting network responded on Wednesday to recent news articles about its operations and once again denied a claim by a former employee that he had a gay affair with its founder. The Trinity Broadcasting Network issued a press release claiming that articles published by the Los Angeles Times over the past week failed to accurately depict the Costa Mesa-based organization in a fair light. “The newspaper's publisher has its own agenda,” said TBN spokesperson Colby May. “Its reporting has been selective and subjective.” [The LA Times had run over 3000 stories about Crouch and TBN.]
The strong response from the Christian TV network comes after recent stories by the Times that showed its founder, Paul Crouch and his wife, Jan Crouch, earn more than $750,000 together in salaries and have an array of luxuries at their ready, including a TBN-owned jet and 30 homes across the United States. The Orange County-based network collects more than $120 million a year from viewers in dozens of countries…
And who can forget the vehemently anti-gay Ted Haggard, founder of the New Life mega-church and president of the National Association of Evangelicals. While railing against homosexuality, it seems Rev. Haggard was secretly paying a male prostitute (Mike Jones) for sex and some crystal meth to make it last longer. At first, in 2006, Rev. Haggard denied it, then admitted it, and then, in 2009…
DENVER – Disgraced evangelical leader Ted Haggard’s former church disclosed Friday that the gay sex scandal that caused his downfall extends to a young male church volunteer who reported having a sexual relationship with Haggard – a revelation that comes as Haggard tries to repair his public image.
Brady Boyd, who succeeded Haggard as senior pastor of the 10,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, told The Associated Press that the man came forward to church officials in late 2006 shortly after a Denver male prostitute claimed to have had a three-year cash-for-sex relationship with Haggard.
Boyd said an “overwhelming pool of evidence” pointed to an “inappropriate, consensual sexual relationship” that “went on for a long period of time ... it wasn't a one-time act.” Boyd said the man was in his early 20s at the time. He said he was certain the man was of legal age when it began. …
But Ted pronounced himself “cured.” Yea… right.
And now we have George Alan Rekers and his recent “vacation” with a male prostitute whose RentBoy.com profile Rekers must have read, since he hired him from that site:

“Geo’s” RentBoy pictures can be seen here. In the early stories about the tryst, “Geo” is called “Lucien.” Neither is his real name. But George Alan Rekers is his real name. Dr. Rekers is a Baptist minister and a leading “scholar” for the Christian Right. As Penn Bullock and Brandon K. Thorp reported in their May 6, 2010 Miami New Timesarticle,
In 1983, [Rekers] and James Dobson, America’s best-known homophobe, formed the Family Research Council, a D.C.-based, rabidly Christian, and vehemently anti-gay lobbying group that has become a standard-bearer of the nation’s extreme right wing. …
He has also influenced American government, serving in advisory roles with Congress, the White House, and the Department of Health and Human Services and testifying as a state’s witness in favor of Florida’s gay adoption ban. A former research fellow at Harvard University and a distinguished professor of neuropsychiatry at the University of South Carolina, Rekers has published papers and books by the hundreds, with titles like Who Am I? Lord and Growing Up Straight: What Families Should Know About Homosexuality.
“While he keeps a low public profile, his fingerprints are on almost every anti-gay effort to demean and dehumanize LGBT people,” says Wayne Besen, a gay rights advocate in New York City and the executive director of Truth Wins Out, which investigates the anti-gay movement. …
Rekers is a board member of the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), an organization that systematically attempts to turn gay people straight. And the Huffington Post recently singled out Rekers as a member of the American College of Pediatricians – an official-sounding outfit in Gainesville that purveys lurid, youth-directed literature accusing gays of en masse coprophilia. … [italics added]
Not only did Rekers testify “as a state’s witness in favor of Florida’s [and Arkansas’s] gay adoption ban,” he was paid for his services:
By Julie Bolcer
Posted on Advocate.com May 07, 2010
The office of Florida attorney general Bill McCollum paid antigay activist George Rekers at least $60,000, based on a rate of $300 per hour, to testify as an “expert” witness in the court case defending the state’s comprehensive ban on gay adoption.
According to NBC Miami, “Attorneys for McCollum paid Rekers at least $60,900 and perhaps as much as $87,000 for expert testimony in the appeal of the case. But in his testimony, Rekers claimed gays make inferior and even dangerous parents and that adopted kids living in gay households, even after 10 years, would be better off removed from the home and placed with straight parents.” …
How totally hypocritical, as Bullock and Thorp noted: “Lucien tells us that Rekers frequently takes in foster children and that four years ago he adopted a 16-year-old boy. We found the boy, who is now Lucien’s age, on Facebook. He declined to be interviewed.”
Since Bullock and Thorp broke the story, Rekers has been issuing statements and amended statements that make Haggard’s initial denial look plausible. First he said he hired “Lucien” to help him with his luggage. But this photo clearly shows Rekers handling his own luggage while “Lucien” looks on. Pathetic lying: someone as prominent as Dr. Rekers couldn’t find a friend or colleague or someone other than a RentBoy to help him with his luggage on an all expense paid vacation to Europe? Last ime I traveled, both airports and hotels had staff to help with luggage. Rekers then claimed he just “evangelized” and “shared the Gospel” with his “travel assistant.”
But finally, Jo-vanni Roman, the “real” name of Dr. Rekers’ RentBoy “travel assistant” spoke the truth:
By Neal Broverman
Posted on Advocate.com May 06, 2010
Antigay activist George Rekers is indeed gay, according to the male escort he hired for a 10-day trip across Europe.
The escort spoke to the Miami New Times at length Wednesday night, detailing his sexual exploits with Rekers, who had previously claimed the young man accompanied him to Europe to help haul his luggage. He told the New Times he provided Rekers with daily body rubs in the nude.
“It’s a situation where he’s going against homosexuality when he is a homosexual,” he told the New Times. “In all honestly [sic], he should disassociate himself from these [antigay] groups.” …
When contacted yesterday by The Advocate, Roman was hesitant to speak about Rekers but according to the New Times, a friend who filled him in on Rekers antigay record convinced him to speak out. …
And then, another revelation:
Things Rekers Said To Lucien When He Didn't Think We Were Listening
By Miami New Times Staff, Thursday, May 6, 2010
Anti-gay activist George Alan Rekers contends in an earlier post on Riptide that he did not hire a young gay escort named Lucien as a prostitute. But what the minister – who hasn’t returned calls seeking comment – likely didn’t realize is that Miami New Times reporters were sitting beside Lucien during a candid conversation over speakerphone.
During that talk – which took place at about 1 a.m. Thursday in a Fort Lauderdale home – Rekers told Lucien several times not to talk to the press. He also never challenged two statements by Lucien: 1) that the minister had found the 20-year-old escort on an internet site, and 2) that they “did the whole massage thing,” referring to Lucien’s contention that he gave Rekers nude massages during their two-week trip to Europe. …
Suffice to say, Dr. Rekers’ only concern in the conversation seemed to be keeping “Lucien” from talking with the media:
Rekers … said he has a “friend in the media” who’s advised him to avoid all contact with the press. Rekers told Lucien to do the same. …
Lucien suggested that perhaps “the media” had a point and that Rekers really had done harm to the gay community. He insisted that Rekers’ struggle wasn’t his, and said he had considered making a statement to the press.
“Well, don’t do that,” said Rekers. “It just causes more harm.”
“What was going through your mind when you went on that website?” demanded Lucien, referring to rentboy.com, the gay escort site where he had posted his profile. …
“Sometimes I feel like I should just tell [the press] what happened on the trip.”
“No,” said Rekers quickly, “Please don’t do that. …
You can read the full report of the phone conversation Bullock and Thorp transcribed here.
Anti-gay gay leaders of the Christian Right aren’t the only ones whose deception has been exposed. More than a few anti-gay gay GOPers have been exposed as well. Click here for a list of the Top Ten.
How sad that all these gay men hate themselves so much that they live lives of deception and fraud and crusade against gays who are open and live truthful lives. How sad that they knowing, intentionally hurt so many others. How sad that they use religion as a weapon of hate and a means to justify discrimination. But how appropriate that they are now paying the price in public shame and ridicule.
As for people like “Lucky Louie” Sheldon, Andrea Lafferty, and Peter LaBarbera, what can one say about those who spend their lives and make their living encouraging hate and discrimination? The only word that comes to mind is “pathetic.”
But there’s an upside. As more self-righteous anti-gay gays are exposed, and people like Sheldon, Lafferty, and LaBarbera continue to make outlandish statements and become more vicious in their hateful rhetoric, perhaps more people will see them for the cancer they are. Perhaps more people will see the damage they do to individuals and families. Perhaps more people will see the perversity they promulgate. Perhaps more people will turn against them and their bigotry and understand that all people must be treated with dignity and respect, and that all citizens deserve equal civil rights. A hope? Yes. But also the path American history inevitably takes.
George Alan Rekers: A Post Scriptum
A second man, a former male prostitute, came forward earlier today with details of his sexual encounter with rent-boy hiring Christian anti-gay leader George Rekers. We gave him a call to get his full story.
We haven’t been able to confirm the events that the former stripper, escort and adult actor named Carl Shepherd says took place at the Hyatt Regency at Chicago’s O’Hare airport in 1992. We could not reach Rekers directly for a comment, but we received a very brief statement from an email address associated with him. It said only: “Professor George Rekers has never been to the Hyatt Regency Hotel at O’Hare Airport in Chicago.”
Without confirming evidence, it’s just a case of “he said” vs. “he said.” But given Dr. Rekers’ rather pathetic “carrying luggage” excuse for taking his RentBoy “travel assistant” – Jo-vanni Roman – on an all expense paid vacation to Europe, the curt denial about being at “the Hyatt Regency Hotel at O’Hare Airport in Chicago” is suspicious, at best. Mr. Shepherd’s description of his 1992 encounter with Dr. Rekers does echo what’s known from Mr. Roman about their nude massages:
He [Rekers] lay on the bed, stomach down. I [Shepherd] climbed astride him and started massaging his neck.
“Lighter, just run your fingers over my skin. Like a kind of tickle touch.”
So I did. I ran my fingers down his spine. He was squirming and pushing his ass up in the air, because he wanted me to touch him there. Eventually I’d touched him over every inch of his body with the same light touch. He got very aroused for an old guy – I was impressed actually.
Looking back I think he thought that it wasn’t gay, that he hadn’t crossed the line, because he didn’t want me to masturbate him at all. Just run my fingers over him there.
We lay on the bed afterwards, both still naked. There was still some time left so I asked him:
“Did you call me up just because I’ve been in porn movies?”
He didn't answer for a little while. “I didn't know. What type of thing?”
I told him about the oral and anal sex that I engaged in. He seemed really disgusted. His face curled up. He handed me $150 and I left. But I felt a bit guilty it had ended like that. I remember thinking that I’d really grossed him out, that I'd corrupted this confused man. …
I know several men who, like Rekers, don’t wish to engage in oral or anal sex with men. They find gratification in simply being touched and caressed by another man.
Nevertheless, if you pay a young gay prostitute for nude messages that give you an “impressive” erection, then guess what… you have homosexual tendencies. You may be deeply closeted, self-loathing and in denial, but you have what can only be called “gay proclivities.”
Sexuality is a spectrum. Few people are 100% heterosexual or 100% homosexual. Most people are somewhere in between. The understanding of that spectrum is an issue in the Rekers case.
Given his educational credentials and personal experience, surely Dr. Rekers understood that spectrum of sexuality. He chose to conceal from public view his homosexual side from which he clearly got pleasure in private. Fine. But what’s not fine is his public, professional campaign against the gay community, of which it now seems he is, in part, a part.
He’s also now in a position to counteract – from the “inside” – dogmatic anti-gay crusaders’ specious arguments. Will he be honest and denounce the “ex-gay” therapies of NARTH, an organization with which he was involved, or will he stay in denial, pull a Ted Haggard and claim to be “cured”? Now that he’s been exposed, will he be a voice for civil equality, or will he continue advocating discrimination?
What will he do?
