The Traditional Values Coalition was once a significant player in America’s radical Christian Right, but then the TVC founder and Chairman got caught:
‘Lucky Louie' throws the dice January 08, 2006
by Debra J. Saunders
You know the Rev. Lou Sheldon as the anti-gay leader of the California-based Traditional Values Coalition, but star lobbyist Jack Abramoff – now the sultan of pleading guilty – knew Sheldon as “Lucky Louie.”
The Washington Post reported in October how Sheldon helped gambling interests who did business with Abramoff – and Sheldon. In 2000, eLottery, an Abramoff client – sent a $25,000 check to the Traditional Values Coalition, as per Abramoff's instruction. Then, the anti-gambling Sheldon lobbied enthusiastically against a bill to curb online gambling. At Casa Sheldon, grease is a traditional value.
When the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act went down in flames in a House vote, an Abramoff associate e-mailed colleagues, “There was Lucky Louie out front” high five-ing with some lobbyists.
When the Post called Sheldon to ask Sheldon about eLottery, Sheldon said he did not remember receiving the check, “I don’t think I ever saw the check. It came in, and we paid the bill for some of the printing.” …
When I reached Sheldon on his cell phone, he said he couldn’t hear me. After I left a message, he didn’t call back.
So I’ll use this space to tell a story of conservative corruption – of how money greased the way for one conservative to lobby against his principles, turn on conservatives with principles and mislead his flock. …
Lucky Louie is still around, but it seems TVC – renown for its grotesque exaggerations and misinformation – is now in the hands of his daughter, Andrea Lafferty, who carries on the family tradition. Her latest nonsensical rant:
Andrea Lafferty: ENDA will lead to the molestation of disabled veterans April 17, 2010 10:10 AM
The gay community has been accused of destroying civilizations, corrupting morals, and yes even molesting infants, but Andrea Lafferty of the Traditional Values Coalition has officially reached the zenith of homophobia with her new accusation – pro-gay laws will allow the VA to molest disabled veterans.
Lafferty's new line of craziness took place during the Freedom Federation’s “Awakening” conference and it continued the same inaccurate line of attack she and her organization (the Traditional Values Coalition) have continued against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) that Congress will possibly be voting on in the coming weeks.
ENDA would protect the lgbt community against employment discrimination. However, Lafferty and TVC have been pushing the phony assertion that ENDA would protect behaviors such as pedophilia, prostitution, bestiality. This video, courtesy of Right Wing Watch has to be seen to be believed. …
Known and very popular cialis coupon which gives all the chance to receive a discount for a preparation which has to be available and exactly cialis coupons has been found in the distant room of this big house about which wood-grouses in the houses tell.
When I first began writing about the need to guarantee equal civil right for gay Americans, I had the honor of being targeted by the Traditional Values Coalition. My response was published by OnLine Journal and can be read here.
You really have to wonder about people like Sheldon and Lafferty, both of whom claim to be “good Christians” but act like theofascist propagandists hell bent on inciting fear and hatred and hurting gay Americans and their families in any and every way possible. I can’t help but feel sorry for them. They’re so filled with hate that lying has become their “traditional value.” Religious Tolerance.org details the history of TVC’s distortions, misrepresentation and outright lies in relation to ENDA.
The Employment Non-Discrimination Act would guarantee every American the right to compete equally for gainful employment regardless of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation. The bill does not apply to the armed services, religion-based organizations, or companies with fewer than fifteen employees, nor does it does require employers to provide domestic partner benefits. It does not require employers to hire gays or do anything except be fair: the best person should get the job. What’s wrong with that?
On 11 January 1944, in his State of the Union address, the president of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, proposed a second Bill of Rights:
… We have come to a clear realization of the fact that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. “Necessitous men are not free men.” People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.
In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all regardless of station, race, or creed.
Among these are:
The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the Nation;
The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;
The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;
The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;
The right of every family to a decent home;
The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;
The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;
The right to a good education.
All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being.
America’s own rightful place in the world depends in large part upon how fully these and similar rights have been carried into practice for our citizens. For unless there is security here at home there cannot be lasting peace in the world. …
For all you “good Christian” readers, reread that last paragraph, and then consider if the vile rhetoric and distortions coming from the Traditional Values Coalition represent your values, or Christianity’s, or America’s. Alvin McEwan put it succinctly at the end of his article:
… Lafferty and TVC continue to soldier on with their lies about ENDA seemingly in hopes that mindless repetition will trump truth.
I don’t know what’s worse about TVC’s attack on ENDA – that it’s been nothing but lies from day one or with the utterance of a new lie, the integrity of Christianity slides down a notch.
Christians in America needs to ask themselves do Lafferty and TVC speak for them. If the answer is yes, then they have bigger problems than an alleged “gay agenda.”
Click here for that “gay agenda” as it was so well expressed by Rep. Barney Frank, and then think about FDR’s vision for America, virtually every aspect of which is opposed by America’s Christian Right, usually claiming such “rights” would be anti-biblical socialism.
Perspectives: Universal health care – Unbiblical socialism March 21, 2007
[By] Rev. Mark Creech - Guest Columnist OneNewsNow.com
The prospect of government-funded universal health care is another example of America’s departure from its strong Judeo-Christian roots and its love affair with socialism. Economic systems that perpetuate or construct dependence or reward sloth strike at the very heart of what it means to be human. …
But I bet the aging leaders of America’s Christian Right accept – or will accept – their Social Security checks and Medicare benefits.
