Dear John,

The news that you have decided to drop your candidacy for president turned an otherwise sunny day into a dark one for me, but we must all respect your decision. How unfortunate, for our country, that an honest campaign has degenerated into a horse race, and that focus has been placed on that which has allure, novelty, and is, in the end, of little consequence instead of on issues that will reverberate for generations to come, such as future appointments to the Supreme Court.

In your insistence on articulating specifics, and not succumbing to the generality fatigue of campaign rhetoric, you have infused day-to-day politics with a dynamism, intelligence, and integrity that will not soon be forgotten, and shown inspired leadership. I, for one, hope that, like Senator Kennedy, you will continue to speak up for those causes that mean the most to this country, and make your voice heard. We need to stay focused on economic justice, voter nullification, and socioeconomic disenfranchisement. We cannot afford to drop the ball on corporate greed, and the insidiousness of special interest lobbies. We need empowerment by wisdom, not weapon, and leadership that isn't afraid to admit that they've made a mistake.

Your presence will continue to be felt by all those who admire courage, sincerity, and who think the working man and woman of this great country deserve a fair shake.

Yours in struggle,
Jayne

PF: What an embarassment
Your undoubtedly sincere desire to seek political change in this country is horribly misdirected. Despite his rhetoric, Mr. Edwards did not somehow become the voice of the working class in 2007. His salaried work for a hedge fund is well-documented and -understood, despite his repeated claims that, really, some hedge funds do really good work. Uh huh. He is backed by the same monied interests fueling the despicable Obama/Clinton show -- major law firms, financial institutions, defense contractors. He was running mate with one of the most politically conservative (and by far the wealthiest) Democratic candidates in US history in 2004. He supported the Iraq war, repeatedly voted to continue funding it, and gave the Pentagon a blank check to continue its rape and pillaging of the planet.

Jayne, please channel your righteous anger into organizing independently of these Democratic party hacks. This begging for scraps from the tables of John Edwards (and Ted Kennedy of all people) does nothing to improve the lives of working people, or our prospects for real change. This plea humiliates and shames us all, and it denies our own power to change the world. If you want peace, if you want economic justice, if you want something resembling a fair society, organize, organize, organize. "Yours in struggle"? Please.

Jayne: Merit
While there may be merit to your argument, you have diluted whatever value there is by your patronizing, condescending, and sardonic response.

Whoever you are, may you have someone insult your intelligence, and fast, just as you have publicly insulted mine.

Jayne: Correction
Oooops, pardon me, PF, I have one correction: someone already has insulted your intelligence----you have!

PF: "Correction"
I don't understand your comments, but I stand by my response. Your groveling, despicable plea for leadership from John Edwards insults all working people. I hope one day soon you will see through the charade that is the American electoral system and truly work for social justice and an end to imperialist war. Until then, when you go public with your views, at least be woman enough to defend them and learn to deal with criticism.

PF: "Correction"
I do not understand your reaction to my comments, Lady Jayne, but I stand by them. Your despicable, groveling plea for leadership from John Edwards is an insult to all working people. Someday soon, I hope you see through the charade that is the American electoral process and work for genuine social justice and an end to imperialist war. Until then, when you go public with your views, at least be woman enough to defend them and learn how to deal with substantive criticism.
