GAZA - Xinhua is reporting the Palestinian militant unit Hamas is about to shift its posture toward Israel from defensive to offensive. One of their political leaders Ahmed Nemer stated, “A few days ago I have met Hamas military wing chief Mohammed al-Dief and he told me we will start attacking Israel instead of just defending ourselves. The al-Qassam Brigades are ready now and wait the orders from the political levels to strike inside the heart of Israel, the occupation entity, if they did not stop the killings and operations in Gaza Strip.” The Palestinian militant groups are more heavily armed now than this time last year due to the constant smuggling of weapons from Egypt to Gaza through the Sinai peninsula, a network established by Teheran that circumvents the authority of the government of Egypt President Hosni Mubarak. For most of this year it has been reported the Palestinians not only have the longer range Qassam but perhaps also the more powerful Katyusha rocket Hezbollah used so effectively last year from Lebanon.

Damascus - It is no coincidence this statement was made the day after the meeting in Damascus between Syria President Bashar al-Assad and Iran Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in which they discussed, in fact planned the next series of attacks against Israel by Palestinian groups. Jeursalem will probably respond with its threatened invasion of Gaza and I suspect Hezbollah will then join the war and with the full support of Lebanon’s army which just fired anti-aircraft weapons at Israeli aircraft last week. Then Damascus - Teheran announce their entry in the name of supporting Palestinian people and this year’s regional war, that began in late winter, will then become (f)allout.

Jerusalem - In preparation for the worse Israel has begun four days of maneuvers in the north near Lebanon’s border since the government of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert realizes the biggest threat to them is from Lebanon. Xinhua reports the exercises are being conducted with land - air forces, intelligence and S4 units.

Teheran - The same day Russia completes two weeks of strategic bombers maneuvers, that included test firing of cruise missiles near the Black Sea, Reuters reports Russia Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Teheran to dicuss a range of issues. I suspect the main topic of discussion is the effectiveness of the Russian bombers in leading Moscow’s response to its military standoff with Georgia in the South Caucasus just north of Iran. And that the same bombers will be used to attack Iran and Turkey’s support for the Georgian government in Tbilisi, even if it means attacking targets inside Iran-Turkey.
