About

Atlantic Free Press was launched in September 2006 by Dutch-Canadian R.G. Kastelein of V.O.F. Expathos, in the Netherlands and American Expatriate Chris Floyd of Oxford, UK.

Brick Ogden, an American Expatriate in Amsterdam has been a key supporter of this project.

Assistant Editor Canadian Chris Cook hails from Victoria, British Columbia and Senior Writer Paul William Roberts is based in Toronto - but often on the road.

The mission of AF Press is simple: to dig out nuggets of truth from the slag-heap of lies, ignorance and witless diversion that has buried public discourse today. AF Press provides a new venue for disseminating hard news and insightful, fact-based analysis of the harsh realities too often ignored or distorted by the mainstream press.

Sicko

MICHAEL MOORE: Well, I don’t agree with the copyright laws and I don’t have a problem with people downloading the movie and sharing it with people. As long they’re not doing it to make a profit off it, as long as they’re not, you know, trying to make a profit off my labor. I would oppose that. But um, you know I do quite well and I um…I don’t know, I make these books and movies and TV shows because I want things to change, so the more people that get to see them the better, and um, so I’m, I’m happy when that happens, OK? Should I not be happy I don’t know? It’s like if a friend of yours has the DVD of my movie, gave it to you to watch one night, is that person doing something wrong? I’m not seeing any money from that. But he’s just handing the DVD to you so that you can watch my movie. A DVD that he bought, but you’re not buying it, yet you’re watching it without paying me any money. See I think that’s OK, and it’s always been OK, we share things with people. And I think information and art, ideas should be shared.

a guest: Appreciating the Canadian Health Care
I watched Sicko a couple of days ago. It's a great movie, entertaining and informative. I'm sure it will prompt a lot of interesting discussion. I was espescially moved when he took the 9-11 responders to Cuba and they got the medical help they needed there. Being Canadian, I am grateful and appreciate the health care system we have. However, I think our government is moving it in some disturbing directions with the two tiered system gaining ground. All is not well in our system with, for example, the long wait times for surgeries and the need to travel to the larger cites for specialized care. I recently had a very frustrating experience when my father developed a serious infection in his foot. It took us 10 hours in emergency to see a doctor and get him admitted to hospital. As the hospital was full, he spent two days in a 'temporary' room before they moved him to a proper room. A minor complaint perhaps, considering what patients deal with in the American system. Of course there was no cost and when he was sent home he had help from a home care nurse. I think we need to be very vigilant here in Canada that our system doesn't slide into an American style one. Hopefully, this movie will motivate Canadians to not take our health care for granted.

Where in the Constitution, does it say the Federal government is to provide health care for everyone?

Separately, Moore said he would not prosecute those already circulating bootleg copies of the still-unreleased documentary on the Internet. "I'm happy for people to see my movie. I'm not a big fan of the copyright laws in this country," he said.

I have just finished watching this movie and now have a great new respect for Mr. Moore. I must admit that it shames me to learn that the very Countries they want us to condemm are the ones who care more for thier people than we do. We are supposed to be the greatest country for freedom and help to others that there is, yet we do nothing for our own. I believe that Mr. Moore should rent the largest Stadium he can find, and that every American should demand that every House Rep, Senate Rep, Govenor, Mayor, State Rep, Medical CEO'S, Doctors and all other professions related to this disater should be forced to sit and watch this video and then explain why we are so thoughless towards the very people who made them all rich and put them where theyre at. We have always had the control necessary to change things, We just never had someone to lead us in that direction. Instead they want us to come in the back door for fear that someone might notice us. Thank you Mr, moore for your couragous efforts in reporting this to us. If the powers to be were smart, they would take a real good look.

Your MSP is worthless. Have you tried to get surgery lately? The hospitals all require private insurance now like Pacific Blue Cross, Great West Life, etc.

Don't be so smug. You are next!

It is SICK that this site posts President Bush's FBI aquired illegal copy of sicko. This is your government working to destroy MM's financial base. And you call yourself activists? Ok, you are not activists, just dupes for the powers that be.

SHAME!!!

Honestly America, we need to have universal healthcare. We need to vote for person who will concentrate on improving the system to achieve this goal rather than focusing efforts on wars abroad.

A commentor asks, "Where in the Constitution, does it say the Federal government is to provide health care for everyone?"

Where in the Constitution does it say the federal government is to provide an interstate highway system for everyone?

Nowhere, but we'd sure be in a fix (similar to the fix we are in with health care) if we didn't have it. And this is true of many things.

Where in the Constitution does it say the federal government is NOT to provide health care for everyone?

Thats just f*%king dandy. As a long time pirate, who has now purchased the best discoveries of his trade, I must say, the not-for-profit motivations are essential. Got quite a few ads on this page though, even more on file front. I'm not quite sure this is what he meant.

a guest: Americans still don't see the difference between social health insurance and social medicine? http://superdave.com
In Canada the doctors have to compete, and the patients choose who they want to see.

It's not the health care that's socialized... it's the health INSURANCE!

That means that the doctors still have to compete in a free enterprise mode, but the insurance system is not motivated by free enterprise motives to maximize profits by not paying.

An eye opener of a film. No, we don't have healthcare in good old USA that remotely compares to France, Canada, the UK and many other countris of Western Europe. Moore's contribution is immense public service and I din't expect anything less from Michael.

KUCINICH made Universal SINGLE-PAYER (not for profit) Health Care a MAJOR issue of his 2004 presidential campaign. He has co-authored H.R.676 with John Conyers and is pushing hard to make "single-payer" national health care a REALITY!! Kucinich also is THE author of H.R.333, Articles of Impeachment for Cheney. Kucinich is the ONLY candidate who not only voted against the Iraq invasion, but also rallied 125 members of Congress to do the same, AND he voted against every supplemental for funding the continuation of the war!! KUCINICH IS THE ONLY CHOICE for Peace and the changes our country NEEDS ... http://Kucinich.US

Though I certainly don't agree with you politically, I must commend you on a job well done. Perhaps your movies are a bit biased, but I really look forward to Sicko, as I myself am a firm believer in Universal Health Care. If all liberals were as assertive in their struggle as you, their party might get the respect all political parties deserve. Power to the people.

Framing the debate issue: Cultural labeling norms is what lets vested interests divide and conquer for excessive greed:

We decided we don't want people's houses to burn down so there are public fire depts.

We decided we didn't want people to get robbed so there is police dept's

These are likewise life and death issues we decided are in fact a "public good" [economic term] without corporate profits [and patent protection - i.e. for 80% gross profits like drugs. / BTW, patents are NOT a free market assumption thus not truly part of a "free market" as the right asserts things should be.].

To win the debate BASIC health care [we already decided we wouldn't let people die on hospital doorsteps] NEEDS TO BE REFRAMED AS A "PUBLIC GOOD" JUST LIKE POLICE AND FIRE. [I see Michael has been saying this and I have been for 10 yrs...]

Further, without "universal health care" there is no "universal accountability" [which the left should play up [in appeasement] to avoid gross and unfair cost shifting.
We have got to play up "UNIVERSAL ACCOUNTABILITY" to win the structural debate, and prove a game plan is needed.

Unless these issues are solidly framed the "divide and conquer" entrenched interests will be very difficult to change. I've spent many years and work in finance, mkt's economics, etc and with interest I this crushing topic. I sincerely suggest this be considered in the debate b/e much thought and logic has gone into it - AND it is solid.

It is interesting to see the way this healthcare system basically shapes the views of so many American people. Basically, with the healthcare system as it is, many American people are dismissing human life as having any value as they can accept that their neighbours may die and they may not if they have enough money. Also, the lack of will to pay higher taxes in order to sustain a universal healthcare system is very scary. An abstract commodity is being valued higher than human life. This shapes the views of many Americans, making it easier to accept their country killing millions of innocent people throughout the world in order to maintain wealth. I am not only referring to direct murders and warfare, but indifference to so many people that could easily be helped. I am lucky enough to be Canadian, but nonetheless, we are all part of this and must all help to change it.
