A friend was right, the other night, when, at a play reading, she said that the price of gas would climb to $4 a gallon, in California, where it will remain indefinitely. Yes, indeed, and we don't need crystal balls to see the extent to which corporate gluttony has damaged not merely the socio-economic hemisphere, but the heart, and ethos, of this country. What is often ignored by the mass media is how lots of folks, including myself, will be forced to roll over, and make some immensely tough choices thanks to the lewd and lascivious conduct of the oil cartels. We hear much talk about the obscene profits the oil companies have made over the past year.
We don't hear about the daily sacrifices, at the altar of almighty buck, that 99% of Americans daily make in order to go about living their lives, feeding their families, and finding their way to work. After all, in Southern California, Florida, and most of the country, which is rural, a car is not a luxury item; people must drive to get to and from work, and often in wrenching traffic.
And, we're not even going to talk about the cost to human lives of this monstrous appetite, and lust for profit, this warmongering that has cost more than 3,000 American, and 600,000 Iraqi lives.
This is usury on the part of Chevron, Exxon-Mobil, and the other gout-ridden oil giants. And, if the Internal Revenue Service can devote itself to going after John Doe Taxpayer who screws up on the number of deductions he claims, why in the hell can't the Justice Department go after these crooks, and carpetbaggers, friends of the president, and oil baron in chief, who are raping the middle class in the name of a war on terror. T his is a travesty that requires herculean consumer organizing efforts o stop it, and fast.... where is Ralph Nader when we need him most?

Jimmy Carter warned America in 1976 and again in 1980. Ronald Reagan told America that Carter was just a worry wart (There you go again!) and that we could go on as we were forever. Anyone who stopped to think about that knew that Carter was right and Reagan was bullshit, but Reagan is what the nation wanted to hear and Reagan is who the nation voted for. Now we've hit the wall. Who's to blame? I hate Bush and Cheney as much as anyone else. As much as anyone, I despise the less-is-more ethos that informs the neoconservative social agenda and the take-what-you-can-get attitude that shapes their economic policies. Still, when it comes to the oil crisis, I'm tempted to tell Americans to shut up and suck it up. You were warned. You knew the truth while you pretended to believe the lies. You wouldn't listen. Now you cry because your pocketbook hurts. I hear the Ms Stahl crying about the rape of the middle class performed by the oil companies. I don't hear her cry about the rape of the poor that's been going on these thirty years, now. I don't hear her cry for the fact that, bad as the oil crisis is for the middle class, it's much worse for the poor -- who can't afford cars at all, who can't afford to heat their homes -- and for the working poor -- who work for minimum wages, who can't afford decent cars and who have to spend half of a week's pay these days just to get to-and-from their miserable jobs and never mind the heat bill they can't afford to pay. One good thing will come out of the oil crunch if it does nothing more than destroy the American middle class who have for so long polished the boots of power, even while those boots trample the faces of the poor. It will do a great lot of people a great deal of good to climb out of those gas-guzzling SUVs and climb into rusty, gas-guzzling, 20-year-old wrecks with bad brakes and bald tires (because that's all they can afford). While driving around in such a wreck, it will do the former soccer moms some good to be arrested for endangering the life of a child because they can't afford a safety seat, and to have their vehicles searched for booze and for dope while cops ogle and grope them and tease them for crying about being ogled and groped. When the middle class moms finally get out of jail, they can go home and write to Congress and agitate for welfare reform. What goes around comes around, and it's high time the worm turned on the American middle class. |

The oil companies are gouging us and our government is warmongering in oil countries because we are past the apex for cheap energy .The world is slowly running out of oil ....and life as we know it will change .Time to power down now . |
