The Vatican is run on a budget similar to that of most smaller colleges in the US while it has to serve 1.2.billion faithful across the globe. The art treasures in the Vatican Museums can be sold, I suppose. But to whom? They are priceless yes, or rather some of them. But the continuous upkeep, restoration etc. of those works of art is costing the Vatican quite a bit. This is a treaqsure that the RCC is keeping up for the benefit of the whole wolrd. They don't need to do that. I am grateful that I and thousands of others can see the art in Vatican city for a small entrance fee. The Pope's vestments are sometimes newly made but he is often using copes that have been worn by other popes before him. Anyhow, his "wardrobe" is nothing compared to what is seen in the Russian Orthodox Church. Catholic priests look like paupers compared to them. And another thing: if you do not understand why a church sees fit to praise God with beautiful music and vestments with a tradition that goes back millenia, you will like all wholly secular people only see dollars when you look at it. Enjoy your ranting. - John

Are you saying the Catholic Church is broke?

Are you saying the Catholic Church is broke? Please. Give me a fucking break. You appear to be delusional. The church can well afford to make robes.

For it is the largest financial power, wealth accumulator and property owner in existence. It possesses greater material riches than any other single institution, corporation, bank, giant trust, government or state on the planet. The pope, as the visible ruler of this immense hamper of wealth, is consequently the richest individual of the twentieth century. No one can realistically assess how much the Pope is worth in terms of billions of dollars. - William Holding

Yet again, agressive secularism rears its pretentious head and claims the moral high ground. Yes the papacy has made mistakes and these are aknowledged by the papacy itself. This article, "Wholly Hypocrites", is totally refersable on the philosophy, seularism, the writer has adopted to come to his incorrect conclusion of the office of the Papacy. The 'marble countertops' and so-called huge salaries that are appanantly paid I am afraid do not exist, prove your statement Sarah Flemigton!. The Vatican is constantly in deficit and has actually laid people off recently as it can't afford to pay the so-called huge salaries. A lot of the robes used are not that expensive and often made by nuns for free, D. Philips. Through the local churches on the ground the Papacy has contributed greatly towards poverty, recently His Holines Pope Benedict has sent aid to Gaza to the local Catholic churces to be distributed to the Palastinians, and this happens in many othere places around the world. What have you contributed lately D. Philips?, other than criticism of those who help to combat poverty. If these two article by Flemington and Phillips sum up Seesholtz's article then it proves its irrelevence and ignorance and says much more about its author. Do our homework, Mel Seesholtz Ph.D, I noticed that you write about many subjects, seemingly you know little about most of them, especially Catholicism. - Peter Brown
