Jim Clapper is both honest, and the only person who really gets it

Your source may have been among those that were scarred by Jim Clapper's demand for accountability. As the author of multiple books on intelligence, and not incidentally the #1 Amazon reviewer for non-fiction covering national security, as someone who was there when he fired Marty Hurwitz and brought discipline into the General Defense Intelligence Program, and as someone who has admired him deeply, not least most recently when he was honest with Congress and told them the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency could be perfectly supportive of DoD if transferred from DoD to the DNI (something Brent Scowcroft tried to do only to be over-ruled by Cheney, and something that got Jim Clapper fired by Rumsfeld. Your "hit job" on Rumsfeld is simply not based on the real world. Thank you for making a comment section available so the record can be corrected.
If he had the idea of the position of DNI in the early 90's (a good ten years before the position was actually created), perhaps Clapper should be called a visionary.
Your assertion that Clapper knew nothing regarding regarding DIA's role in the creation of NI estimates is ridiculous. He was the head Intel Officer for SAC, Armed Forces in Korea and the Pacific theater.
I know for a fact that Clapper was not out for a 4th star while in the USAF. In fact he was offered a postion in the AF shortly before his retirement that would have given him his 4th star but would have taken him out of the intel field. He chose not to take the 4th star.
