The American Dream Of Owning A Home

We've had that "dream" drilled into us so much that people actually believe it. The reality is an enormous loan that has become impossible to pay off as people lose their jobs and are unable to find work. What is wrong with a dream of finding a sustainable existence in a community that values the role of each human to respect the planet?

I relocated to Sonoma County from Vermont for exactly that reason. There aren't too many places in the country where there is an opportunity to completely reshape one's life to prepare for the collapse. Food can be grown year-round, air conditioning is not needed, and one can get through winter very comfortably with a cord of wood.

I sold out in 2002, never to "own" a home again. I now work at a farm that uses an irrigation system that is powered by wind and solar. The community is supportive and I feel safe. Sure, I pay rent now, but it's not like I'm stuck living in one place for any amount of time. During relocation I got rid of a lot of crap I never needed and I don't miss it one bit. What was I thinking?!

So, for my woeful neighbors living in the suburban tracts surrounding the Interstate 101 corridor, I have the utmost sympathy. But didn't they see this coming? And why do they keep trying to satisfy this need for more and more lattes, movies, hot tubs, ski vacations, salad shooters, ipods and prozac?

In the coming years they will hopefully readjust, but there will probably be a huge battle. There's been discussion of whether we should consider installing razor wire fencing around the farm. You know... just to make sure we don't get out! - Chris Bird
