The US became an independent nation for the sole purpose of protecting slavery from the British Parliament. The Somerset ruling of 1772 freed slaves in England and would become law throughout the empire. The six slave-holding colonies of the American south were unable to stir interest in independence until they were joined in 1776 by Massachusetts, which had been placed under martial law. The seven states could then compel the six remaining to join or die.
The Constitution itself was drawn up by a committee appointed by the Continental Congress under the Articles of Confederation to instigate means to improve the efficiency of the Articles. One-third of the committee members attending refused to endorse the Constitution they had never been empowered to write. - Class Act

If followed in the first place...

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

the Constitution would still serve well. The issues to which the author speaks ["...health care problems, education reform, campaign finance reform, meaningful gun control laws,...] are not the purview of the feds, the President or the Congress in the first place. View all conversations in Congress under the lamp of the Tenth Amendment and we find that Washington is out of control. That is something that a "Convention" cannot resolve.
