It is my view that the best economic minds of the world are of the opinion that the Fed's interest lowering and congress's stimulation package will have little beneficial effect on the problems presently facing the economy. They may temporarily make things look better and improve public relations, but at the cost of making the inevitable collapse of the economy deeper and of longer duration.

But look at it from Bernanke's standpoint; If he does nothing, than everything that happens from here on out will be his fault ("he just stood there with his mouth open and didn't do anything!"). When what he is doing doesn't work, people will say, "Well, he tried--he did everything he could". Whatever Bernanke's faults are, stupidity is not one of them (and certainly unreserved candor is not amongst his virtues). I think he knows that his situation is hopeless, and that he can do no more that slightly forstall the inevitable. - g. Anton
