The supposed "fringe group" in this case has garnered the support of a long and growing list of religious leaders from the three Abrahamic faith traditions, not to mention the fact that a U.S. Senator, the mayor of the Des Moines where the press conference was held, and the Methodist Bishop of Iowa all took a positive interest in the group's effort and either attended or sent a representative to read a supportive statement. In fact, several mainstream organizations have endorsed the statement. Hardly sounds like a fringe group effort to me. In fact, one of the points of the article, which you seem to have missed, is that even when widely recognized mainstream religious and political leaders speak out in behalf of peace, the corporate media pretty consistently turn a deaf ear, thus marginalizing and to some extent deligitimizing their efforts. It's difficult to build popular support for the peace and social justice community's efforts when the press ignores its events, activities, and very existence, especially so when the same press gives ready access to opposing views, which are also frequently glamorized in mainstream media entertainment product. As long as the peace community has to buy expensive ads to get its message into the newspaper, while warmongers have ready access to press and broadcast media venues which give them license to howl about the necessity for war without end ... - Mike Gillespie

If you behave like a fringe group, you will be treated as a fringe group

There's a very good reason the media didn't pay attention - the groups that were there do not represent any group of any significant size. Groups like "The Shalom Center" aren't representative of Jewish groups in the U.S - it is a fringe group and is generally regarded as such within the Jewish community. Just because a fringe group has an opinion about a subject of national interest doesn't immediately qualify it to be featured in national (or even local) media coverage. You have earn this coverage and you do that by building up your base and by building relationships with larger groups that give you credibility. As it is now, most people don't care about this interfaith effort and these groups have done little to build support that would make it worthy of national or local coverage. - r.kriecyk
