			<description>Gonzales was the perfect fit for the president: loyal and effective in his role. He offered effective cover for the political game by fronting it with the office of the Attorney General (a not uncommon practice, but no disagreement intended in acknowledging the 'evil' of this particular president's game).

My hunch is that game has changed from offense to defense and that the qualifications for the job have been reviewed.
From the SCOTUSblog (link listed below):
&quot;Energetic, smart, seasoned, and totally committed to some of the Bush Administration's most controversial legal positions -- an apt description of U.S. Solicitor General Paul D. Clement, who takes over temporarily as Attorney General, and Deputy Solicitor Gregory G. Garre, who seems likely to assume at least temporarily the duties of Solicitor General.&quot;
Perhaps the president asked himself the question 'Who would I like to be my defense team council when push comes to shove?' My hunch is that if asked, the question could not be answered without a need for a change at the top.
