ARTICLE 19's response: Our work on freedom of expr

The protection of freedom of expression is really ARTICLE 19’s issue. It is at the heart of our 20 years of work all over the world, including in the UK and Europe. Indeed, if Mr Ahmad had taken the time to go browse our publications and website, instead of adopting cheap and unreliable shot tactics, he would have discovered that some of our more recent work on the United Kingdom has included an ongoing campaign against the introduction of anti-terror legislation, detrimental to freedom of expression, including legal analyses on the UK anti-terror bill, a submission to the ICJ Eminent Jurists Panel on freedom of expression and UK anti-terror law and practice. In addition, two editorials from ARTICLE 19’s more recent newsletters have been devoted to the issue of anti-terrorist legislation and to the threats placed on freedom of expression and democracy. As for the gagging order issued on the UK media and the imprisonment of whistleblowers Leo O’Connor and David Keogh, ARTICLE 19 did indeed speak out about this through issuing a joint press release on the issue which clearly condemned both the gagging order and the imprisonment. We also issued a letter to the Guardian which was published on the 12 May 2007 Guardian letters page. In addition, ARTICLE 19 together with Index on Censorship and English PEN have also maintained a high level of lobbying against proposed changes to the freedom of information legislation in the UK including proposals to exempt parliamentary information from disclosure or to introduce new cost assessment measures.

A good description of the Scottish election fiasco. The British media's antics were disgraceful (as usual). But this time at least we were mercifully spared the time-honoured tradition of (police-organised) 'terrorist activity'- though that didn't stop the media the govt claiming it was going on, and that a vote for the opposition was a vote for 21st century gas chambers, etc etc. - a guest
